Nuts are among my favorite types of snacks. They are so nutritious and just a handful of any type can fill you up and fade away any cravings. The most beautiful part is that nuts are so diverse you can never get bored. They all provide different health benefits though, so it’s good to know what to choose for maximum effect. Let me introduce to you some of the most wonder-ful options you can choose from… or as I call them, the wonder-nuts!
- Walnuts – wonder for your brain.
Maybe it’s not by chance that they have the shape of a brain – walnuts are, in fact, excellent for the health of your brain. They contain neuroprotective compounds like vit. E, omega-3 fats, and tons of antioxidants. That leads to improved memory and better brain function. Walnuts also improve metabolism, and may help regulate blood sugar. That is because they contain a lot of dietary fiber and beneficial fats. They also act against free radicals and oxidative processes, helping you to slow down the ageing process and fight disease. A handful of walnuts would be just enough to provide you with all of the goodness.
- Cashews – wonder for your bones and muscles.
Cashews contain a lot of important minerals like iron, zinc and magnesium. Magnesium is especially significant in maintaining healthy bones, increasing energy, relieving muscle aches, supporting heart health, regulating digestion… And while you may think that by taking a magnesium supplement, you’re good to go, you should be aware that the best way to absorb vitamins and minerals is through food itself. So, next time you hit the gym and put all that pressure on your muscles and bones, take a few cashew nuts with you…
- Almonds – wonder for your skin.
Almonds also fall within the “wonder nuts”. They contain a lot of antioxidants, especially vitamin E, which nourishes the skin and slows down ageing. Moreover, if you have dry skin almonds might be a perfect addition to your diet, since these delicious nuts help your skin stay hydrated. In fact, you can make your own face masks and body scrubs, using whole almonds or almond oil. Finally, almonds also contain a great deal of fiber and monounsaturated fatty acids which help control blood sugar and body weight – that’s just an extra bonus to the benefits for your skin!
- Peanuts – wonder for your… weight loss plan!
Peanuts truly work great to support your metabolic rate – they contain a lot of fiber, healthy fats and much more protein than the other nuts (there’s even a fad diet, based only on consuming peanut butter for that same reason – but no, I don’t advise you to eat only peanuts). Those macro elements will help you stay full, managing your hunger for longer. Also, peanuts are digested very slowly and will keep you energized, while decreasing your cravings. So, bottom line is – a little of that peanut butter is actually very useful for you!
You now know that nuts truly are a great snack. My only note is – let them be a snack, and not a main dish, since they really are very nutritional and should be consumed in moderation. Enjoy!
